Holidaymakers in Tenerife may come for the sun and sea, but it is the mountain Teide that really leaves a lasting impression of the island. The Guanches, who once inhabited the island, believed that the devil had imprisoned their god of light inside the volcano. Their supreme god eventually defeated the devil, and artefacts resembling tributes can still be found on the mountain today.
